Alwyn Macomber was a human member of the Anla'Shok in the year 3262, one thousand years after the foundation of the Interstellar Alliance. Macomber was one of the many Anla'Shok that had infilitrated Earth in an attempt to help Earth rebuild itself following the Great Burn. Following this event, Earth had been reduced to a pre-industrial state, with much of its population becoming technophobes. It was the goal of the Rangers to slowly reintroduce technology to the planet gradually. It was Alwyn who ran this abby and oversaw the discreet placement of various pieces of technology that were later found by people. He communicated with his superiors via a hidden communications device hidden in his office. He also kept his Ranger uniform hidden in a closet.

Macomber posed as a monk in the same order as Brother Michael, maintaining contact with his superiors via secret transmissions. Though Michael had a crisis of faith, Macomber considered him a potential recruit for the Rangers.^[1]

There are various pieces of history in Alwyn's room that hint at what he has 'recovered', which include models of three-masted ships, a zeppelin model, a Van De Graaf generator, a Copernican telescope, a circuit board on the table, various wires , an A/B switch, a Da Vinci flying machine model, and what seems to be a full set of Encyclopedia Britannica.
