The date of the First Shadow War is never specified, but we are told that it occured approximately 1000 years before the events of Babylon 5, and that the Shadows were held in check only by the combined efforts of the First Ones and several of the Younger Races, the Minbari most notably.

However, "First Shadow War" is something of a misnomer. As we shall see, a number of major altercations had already taken place between the Shadows and other races.

[edit] Circa 8000 B.C.

During the Last Great Shadow War, the Shadows waged war against the others of the elder races. The conclusion of this war saw the migration of all First Ones beyond the Rim, excepting the Shadows and the Vorlons, who stayed behind to guide the growth of the Younger Races.[1] Since the Shadows and Vorlons favoured different ideologies, it was agreed that a policy of non-aggression should exist between them, and that the Younger Races should be free to favour either Shadow or Vorlon ideology as they pleased. This policy lasted until the Second Shadow War of 2261 A.D.[2]

[edit] Circa 1260 A.D.

As noted, what is now known as the First Shadow War took place 1000 years before the construction of Babylon 5, perhaps in 1260 A.D. The conflict drew in the Vorlons and numerous of the Younger Races.[1] For details on the Minbari part in the war, see Babylon 4. Others of the Younger Races, such as the Narn, experienced only peripheral involement in the war: thus G'Quan, a figure contemporary with the war, notes in his holy book that a Shadow base exists on Narn, but the Shadows seem disinterested in actually interacting with the Narn people .[3]
