John Carter was the pilot who volunteered to pilot Earth's first colony ship to Mars.[1]

In 2169, using jumpgate technology purchased from the Centauri Republic, Carter led the first group of 768 colonists on an interplanetary flight, lasting only a few hours. After landing on Mars, the colonists began construction of Mars Dome One, the new colonial capital.[2]

John Carter was killed on November 15, 2177 when a bomb planted by an Earth isolationist movement destroyed Dome One, killing Carter along with 486 others.[2]

Carter is still remembered well into the twenty-third century and even has a street named after him in the rebuilt Mars Dome One.[3] His family are also still living on the colony, with his great-granddaughter Amanda Carter counted among his descendants.[1]
