"Slugthrower" is slang for most projectile weapons, but excluding others such as crossbows or grenade launchers. Slugthrowers such as handguns, hunting rifles, and machine guns fire metal "slugs" or bullets at their targets. These weapons are generally discouraged from being used on spaceships and space stations because they can rupture a hull, leading to dangerous decompression situations. Weapons that fire pure energy rather than matter, such as PPGs, offer a safer alternative.[1]
