Vance Hendricks is a member of Interplanetary Expeditions and renowned Earth archaeologist.
Dr. Hendricks had been a respected professor of archaeology. One of his students was Stephen Franklin. Growing disillusioned with the academic scene, Hendricks joined Interplanetary Expeditions and began to investigate the ruins of long dead worlds.
In 2258 he arrived on Babylon 5 with some artifacts from the long dead planet, Ikarra VII, along with his assistant, Nelson Drake. Hendricks hoped that the artifacts would prove the key to unlocking organic technology, particularly weapons. They smuggled the artifacts aboard the station to confirm they were weapons. He appealed to his old student, now Dr. Franklin and head of Med Lab on B5, to help him figure out how the artifacts work. Franklin agrees to help. The two spend the day investigating, until it becomes clear that Drake has been infected by one of the artifacts. The result leads him begin to grow into the ancient Ikarran warrior, one that attacks Franklin.
Hendricks denies knowing anything about why it attacked Franklin. He offers to help stop the possessed Drake before he destroys the station.
After Cmdr. Sinclair and station security are able to stop the warrior and save Nelson's life, Dr. Franklin confronts Hendricks about a device he found in Nelson's belongings that was used to murder a crewman when he and Hendricks first arrived. Nelson confirmed that Hendricks had broken the law by refusing to quarantine the artifacts. He admits that IPX is a front for a bio-weapons division and he hoped to sell the artifacts for billions. He offers to make Franklin a partner, saying IPX can clean up the mess, but Franklin turns him down and has him arrested.
